On November 30, Barbados became the world’s newest republic. It is no longer a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Instead, the Caribbean nation has a president.

Barbados is the first country in 30 years to leave the monarchy. Now, Jamaica has announced plans to do the same. Other Caribbean nations may follow.
