Reef balls placed on the ocean floor are bringing back marine life. (Photo via Facebook.)

One year ago, the ocean floor near Fox Harbour, Newfoundland was bare and lifeless. Nothing lived there. No fish. No crabs. No lobsters.

Ocean scientists have brought that dead zone back to life, with the help of reef balls.

Creating a wasteland

What caused the dead zone? An oil company had built a giant offshore oil platform in nearby Argentia. This structure was 146 metres tall. It weighed 201,000 tonnes.
