On May 5, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada is getting a new governor general. Her name? Former Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbour.

The news was no surprise. Governor General Mary Simon’s five years of service is almost at an end. Ms. Arbour will take her place on June 8.

What is a governor general?

Canada is a constitutional monarchy. The prime minister leads our government. But we have a king or queen as our head of state.
