Desiree Ates joined the Regina Police Force four months ago. The new constable is making history. She is the city’s first Black female officer. 

Representation matters

“My primary responsibility is to serve and protect like any other officer. At the same time, I know that representation matters.”

Ms. Ates has lived in Regina for most of her life. Her father is Black. Her mother is Indigenous. 

“Growing up, I didn’t see people that looked like me policing the streets.”
