Pacific herring are spawning along the coastline of British Columbia.

These small silvery fish are only about 25 centimetres long. But don’t be fooled by their size. They have a huge impact on the whole ecosystem.

For First Nations living along the B.C. coast, it’s a sign of spring and a time to harvest. For wildlife, it’s a dinner bell. Almost every species in the area eats herring.

A change of scenery

Herring swim in huge schools. For most of the year, they live deep in the ocean.
