Where do pickles come from? If you said, “the grocery store,” you’d be right.

But Grade 7, 8, and 9 students at Ocean Man First Nation are learning how to make their own.

Their teacher, Stephanie Dayman, is teaching them canning. It’s a way of preserving berries, fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish in glass jars.

A new taste sensation

It all started when she brought in pickles and pickled carrots that she’d made.

“They enjoyed it and asked how it was done.”
