Prehistoric people living in what is now Alberta used tools and weapons made from obsidian. Researchers have found more than 1200 artifacts at more than 500 sites. Arrowheads, spear tips, knives, scrapers. Even tiny bits and pieces of this shiny, black rock.

But none of it comes from Alberta.

How can they be so sure? Obsidian is volcanic glass. It forms when a volcano erupts and the lava cools very quickly. But Alberta has never had a volcanic eruption.
