Pope Francis died on Easter Monday. He was the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Roman Catholics around the world. Under his leadership, the Church became more open and welcoming.

Pope Francis was born in Argentina in 1936. His parents were Italian immigrants. They gave their son the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He chose the name Francis when he was elected pope in 2013.
