Not many 11-year-olds can say they are published authors. But Addy Newman-Ting can. The Victoria girl entered a UNESCO writing competition. And her book won!
The inspiration
The contest was looking for stories about saving Indigenous languages, written by Indigenous kids. When Addy heard about it, she knew she wanted to enter.
She knew just what language to write about, too – Kwakʼwala. It’s the language her grandfather spoke before he went to Residential School.
