In October, war broke out in the Middle East. Hamas, a Palestinian militant group in Gaza, launched a deadly, surprise attack on Israel. Some 1400 Israelis were killed. Thousands were injured. Hamas took more than 240 Israelis hostage.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas. Canada, the U.S., and many other countries consider Hamas to be a terrorist group.

Thousands of civilians in Gaza have been killed or injured in the conflict. Israel says the fighting will continue until the hostages are released and Hamas has been destroyed.
